Wyandot into Huron
By Dr. Kay McGowan

The Mohawk hairstyle of the Wyandot led the French who first encountered them to call them "hure" anglicized it became, "Huron." This also means "uncouth savage" or "ruffian" in the slang of 1630 France. This derogatory name stuck and today we have rivers, townships, corporations, and two tribes, Wendot Hurrone, Huron-Potowatomi named Huron. The Wyandot never called themselves Huron but today the names are used interchangeably. We still prefer to be called Wyandot.
