into Huron By Dr. Kay McGowan The Mohawk hairstyle of the Wyandot led the French who first encountered them to call them "hure" anglicized it became, "Huron." This also means "uncouth savage" or "ruffian" in the slang of 1630 France. This derogatory name stuck and today we have rivers, townships, corporations, and two tribes, Wendot Hurrone, Huron-Potowatomi named Huron. The Wyandot never called themselves Huron but today the names are used interchangeably. We still prefer to be called Wyandot. There are several Wyandot Tribes located in the United States and Canada:
